Rainwater harvesting is one of the oldest ways of water delivery, having been practiced in South Asia and other countries for thousands of years. Evidence reveals that various forms of rainwater collection devices were in use approximately 2000 BC in India, China, Mesopotamia, and modern-day Israel. These systems frequently used huge rocks fashioned into basins with clay and other rocks to prevent leaks. The water was then stored and used for drinking, washing, agriculture, and other purposes.
Normally rain water is harvested either by storing the Surface runoff or by recharging ground water. In the case of surface runoff type rain water harvesting, rainwater flows away as surface runoff and can be stored for future use. Groundwater recharge is a hydrologic process where water moves downward from surface water to groundwater.
However in some places rain water is harvested adopting alternative methods. Below are five such examples of rain water harvesting where the normal procedure of rain water harvesting was not followed:
