The Interview - Andrew Taylor

What inspired the setting of your latest novel?

The setting of my latest novel was inspired by a small coastal town I visited a few years ago. The unique charm and close-knit community of the town left a lasting impression on me, and I felt it was the perfect backdrop for the story I wanted to tell.

How do you manage to keep your plot engaging throughout the book?

To keep my plot engaging, I focus on creating strong, multi-dimensional characters and ensuring that every scene has a purpose. I also incorporate twists and turns that keep readers guessing and maintain a balance between action and character development.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

My favorite part of the writing process is the initial brainstorming and outlining phase. This is when I can let my imagination run wild and explore all the possibilities for my story without any constraints. It’s exciting to see the story start to take shape.

How do you choose the names for your characters?

I choose names for my characters by considering their backgrounds, personalities, and the time period of the story. Sometimes, a name just feels right for a character, and other times I use baby name websites or historical records for inspiration.

What challenges did you face while writing your first book?

One of the biggest challenges I faced while writing my first book was overcoming self-doubt. I constantly questioned whether my writing was good enough and if anyone would want to read it. I also had to learn to manage my time effectively and stay disciplined with my writing schedule.

How do you ensure your characters have distinct voices?

To ensure my characters have distinct voices, I create detailed profiles for each one, including their backgrounds, motivations, and mannerisms. I also pay attention to their speech patterns and word choices, making sure each character’s dialogue reflects their unique personality.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The most rewarding aspect of writing for me is hearing from readers who have been touched or inspired by my work. Knowing that my stories have made a positive impact on someone’s life is incredibly fulfilling and motivates me to keep writing.

Do you plot your stories in advance, or do you write by the seat of your pants?

I’m a bit of a hybrid. I usually start with a loose outline to guide me, but I leave room for spontaneity and allow the story to evolve organically. Sometimes the best ideas come to me while I’m in the midst of writing.

How do you stay motivated to write every day?

Staying motivated to write every day can be challenging, but I find that setting small, achievable goals helps. I also remind myself of the bigger picture and why I started writing in the first place. Connecting with other writers and participating in writing challenges also keeps me inspired.

What has been the most surprising feedback you’ve received from readers?

The most surprising feedback I’ve received was from a reader who told me that my book helped them through a difficult time in their life. It was humbling to hear that my words had provided comfort and solace, and it reinforced the power of storytelling.
