The Interview - Brit Griffin

What inspired you to start writing?

I’ve always been passionate about storytelling. As a child, I loved reading and would often create my own stories. That love for storytelling grew over time, and I was inspired to start writing seriously because I wanted to share my own worlds and characters with others.

How do you approach world-building in your novels?

When it comes to world-building, I start by developing a detailed history and geography for my setting. I consider the culture, politics, and social structures that shape the world. I also create detailed maps and timelines to keep everything consistent and immersive for the reader.

Do you write full-time, or do you have another job?

I currently balance writing with another job. While it can be challenging, having a structured schedule helps me allocate dedicated time for writing each day. This balance also provides different experiences and perspectives that I can incorporate into my stories.

How do you create tension and suspense in your writing?

Creating tension and suspense involves careful pacing and strategic revelation of information. I focus on building high-stakes situations and developing strong, relatable conflicts. Foreshadowing and cliffhangers at the end of chapters also keep readers eager to turn the page.

What’s your favorite genre to write in, and why?

My favorite genre to write in is fantasy. I love the freedom it offers to create entirely new worlds and explore limitless possibilities. Fantasy allows me to weave magic and mythology into my stories, which adds an extra layer of intrigue and wonder.

How do you handle character development throughout a series?

Character development throughout a series involves ensuring that each character has a clear arc and growth over time. I track their progress and challenges across books, making sure they evolve naturally based on their experiences and interactions. Consistency is key to maintaining believable and relatable characters.

What are some common traps for aspiring writers?

Some common traps for aspiring writers include focusing too much on perfection in the first draft, which can hinder progress, and comparing themselves to established authors. It’s important to remember that writing is a journey and that everyone’s path is unique.

How do you stay inspired and motivated to write?

Staying inspired and motivated involves immersing myself in creative activities and consuming different forms of art. Reading books, watching movies, and even listening to music can spark new ideas. Connecting with fellow writers and participating in writing groups also keeps me motivated and accountable.

How important is research in your writing process?

Research is crucial to my writing process, especially for historical or scientifically grounded elements. Accurate details add authenticity to the story and can enhance the reader’s experience. I spend a significant amount of time researching to ensure my work is both believable and engaging.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received about your writing?

The best compliment I’ve received about my writing was from a reader who said my book helped them see the world differently and inspired them to pursue their own creative passions. Knowing that my work can have a positive impact on someone’s life is incredibly rewarding.
