The Interview - Lainey Lawson

How do you come up with ideas for your books?

Ideas for my books often come from a variety of sources, such as dreams, personal experiences, news stories, or even random conversations. I keep a notebook with me to jot down any interesting ideas or snippets of dialogue that come to mind, and I often find that these seeds can grow into full-fledged stories.

What do you think is the most important element of a successful book?

The most important element of a successful book is its ability to connect with readers on an emotional level. Whether through relatable characters, a gripping plot, or powerful themes, a book should evoke strong feelings and leave a lasting impact.

How do you approach writing dialogue?

When writing dialogue, I try to ensure it sounds natural and true to each character's voice. I often read it out loud to see if it flows well and feels authentic. I also pay attention to the rhythm and pacing of the conversation, making sure it serves the story and reveals character.

What role do you think social media plays in the life of an author?

Social media plays a significant role in an author's life by providing a platform to connect with readers, share updates, and promote their work. It allows for real-time interaction and feedback, which can be incredibly valuable. However, it's also important to strike a balance and not let social media distractions take away from writing time.

How do you handle rejection from publishers or agents?

Handling rejection is part of the writing journey. I remind myself that rejection is not a reflection of my worth or ability but rather a sign that my work might not be the right fit for that particular publisher or agent. I try to learn from any feedback I receive and use it to improve my writing.

Can you describe a moment in your career that you’re particularly proud of?

A moment I'm particularly proud of is when I received my first positive review from a well-respected literary critic. It validated all the hard work and dedication I had put into my writing, and it was incredibly rewarding to see my book being appreciated by someone whose opinion I value.

What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

What I enjoy most about being a writer is the freedom to create entire worlds and the opportunity to explore different perspectives and experiences. Writing allows me to express myself in ways that I might not be able to in real life, and it's incredibly fulfilling to bring my imagination to life on the page.
